The phased extension and refurbishment works at three schools, with RCDC responsible for the design of the MEP and Sustainability strategies guided by the principles of 'Be Lean, Be Clean, Be Green,' with an additional 'Be Seen' element. The project consisted of 10 sub-projects to be implemented over a 4 year period.

Embracing a 'fabric first' methodology, the proposed strategy established a robust standard for new build fabric elements, ensuring a foundation of high efficiency. The incorporation of a passive design strategy emphasised natural energy sources, complemented by advanced equipment such as Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) for the new build dining hall.

The commitment to sustainability included the avoidance of gas-fired equipment, aligning with the objective of minimizing the carbon footprint. Proposals for the science extension and Drama and Admin blocks involved integrating with existing systems to optimize resource utilisation.

A parametric study was undertaken which reviewed 2,429 iterations of the facade design and rooflight design for the above dining hall. The study reviewed the solar gains, as well as the daylighting which influenced the design of the facade and roof. The study also reviewed the lantern height, lantern overhang, south facing facade glazing, southern facade overhang and fritting on southern facade.
