RCDC undertook the MEP design of a new SEND school based on the refurbishment of the old Farley Hill School building. Working with the existing limitations of the site, a number of decarbonisation strategies were implemented including removal of the LPG boilers and the installation of Solar PV.

The existing LPG boilers were removed and replaced by a VRF system which provide heating and cooling to maintain a consistent thermal environment for the students. All existing lighting were upgraded to LED with PIR lighting control designed to provide uniform and comfortable lux levels across each classroom and teaching spaces. A total of 40m² of solar panels were installed on the re-tiled roof and new EV charging points provided for staff parking. The building was also sprinklered in line with the council’s own requirements, with a new sprinkler tank and plantroom being installed as part of the project.

Many other facilities were provided as part of the SEND requirements, including new internal play areas including sand and soft play areas as well as a splash spa room. All services were designed with consideration to the safety of its students and their interaction with the building services elements.
